Custodial vs. non-custodial wallets

Custodial wallets are managed by a wallet provider, for example your custodian, and offer the convenience of having someone else manage your assets. This means that you may still gain access if you lose your password, but you have to be willing to accept the security measures provided by the custodian.

Non-custodial wallets, on the other hand, are managed by you, generally through the use of software, or on the blockchain itself. These wallets provide you with more control, privacy, and security, but require greater user responsibility.

Warning

If you lose your private key, you likely lose access to the assets in the wallet.

When selecting a crypto wallet to store your Ripple USD, it is crucial to determine which type of wallet aligns best with your requirements. The table below summarizes the key aspects to consider:

Feature Custodial wallet Non-custodial wallet
Ownership A third party, for example a custodial service, holds and manages the private keys. The user has direct access and full control over their private keys.
Security Security is managed by the custodian, which often includes cold storage, and protection against hacking. The user is responsible for deciding how security is handled.
User experience Custodial services tend to provide user-friendly interfaces, with services such as password recovery and customer support. Requires more technical knowledge. Users must understand how to manage and back up private keys. No built-in recovery options; if keys are lost, access to funds is lost.
Privacy Custodial wallets offer less privacy for the user. Non-custodial wallets offer more privacy.
