# Update policies

There are two different types of updates you can do to policies:

- Update the approval workflow only.
- Update all details, including the approval workflow.


Updating policies can have unexpected side effects. You need to be very careful that updates to your policies do not prevent you from creating and updating other entities in your environment.

## Update the approval workflow

To update the approval workflow for a policy:

1. Navigate to **Policies**.
2. At the end of the policy row, click the contextual menu and select **Edit policy approval workflow**.
3. Update the workflows settings of the policy, as described in step 3 of [Create a policy](/products/custody/v1.34/ui/environment/policy/create#create-a-policy).
4. Click **Submit for approval** and [sign the operation with the app](/products/custody/v1.34/ui/get-started/key-operations/intent-signature).


The policy is updated when the intent is successfully executed.

## Update all policy details

To update all details of a policy:

1. Navigate to **Policies**.
2. Click the contextual menu at the end of the policy row and then select **Edit policy approval workflow**.
3. Update the policy, as described in step 3 of [Create a policy](/products/custody/v1.34/ui/environment/policy/create#create-a-policy).
4. Click **Submit for approval** and [sign the operation with the app](/products/custody/v1.34/ui/get-started/key-operations/intent-signature).


The policy is updated when the intent is successfully executed.
